ALEXIS O’NEILL, a local Simi Valley author, will be the featured speaker at the Simi Valley Friends of the Library’s Family Book Festival on April 6th, 2014. Alexis will be sharing her latest book The Kite That Bridged Two Nations: Homan Walsh and the First Niagara Suspension Bridge. Alexis is well known to many Simi Valley elementary school students for her beloved books THE RECESS QUEEN (Scholastic Press), a bully book which was on the Los Angeles Times list of Best Selling Children’s Books, LOUD EMILY (Simon & Schuster), featured in Newsweek Magazine, and ESTELA'S SWAP (Lee & Low Books) a multicultural book about generosity and a unique California experience. The Library is excited to welcome Alexis O’Neill to the Family Book Festival. The Book Festival evolved from the annual Children’s Book Week Celebration that Alexis established and chaired for the Simi Valley Friends of the Library. As a former elementary school teacher, Alexis has been an advocate for children’s literacy for many years. “There is no doubt that an author visit can encourage children to read for pleasure” says Alexis. "When kids meet an author in person something magical takes place. I’ve seen it happen over and over. Kids begin to make a real connection between what authors do and what they themselves are doing every day in school. When kids meet authors and illustrators, all books take on a new dimension for them. They realize that real people are behind books and that they, too, can express themselves in this very satisfying way." Joining Alexis at the Book Festival will be Dave Shenkman from Kites for Kids. His presentation will culminate with each child in attendance making a kite. There will also be performances by drama students from Santa Susana and Simi Valley High Schools. These students volunteer their time to bring to life books specially chosen for the occasion. The children are always eager to see the local teens perform.
